Four kinds of no, and how to tell them apart

• Not offered at all — the only kind that is a genuine dead end, and the only one worth abandoning early.
• Present but switched off — the feature exists and stays inactive on the account until it is requested or set up.
• Filed elsewhere — it works, but it belongs to a different surface than the one being searched.
• Named differently — it works, under a label that does not match the words a trader would type.
• Sorting a missing item into one of those four boxes takes seconds and decides whether to keep looking.

Where a missing item usually turns out to be

Outside the offer — the only real dead end

The first box is the smallest and the most useful, because it is the only one that ends the search. A thing in this box is not hidden behind a setting and not renamed: it is simply not part of what the broker does. Minutes spent hunting for it in menus are minutes lost, and the practical move is to look for the nearest thing that does exist.

The tell is that the wording appears nowhere on the account surface — not in the Personal Area, not in the trading window, not in the index of the help centre. Anything that is merely inactive still leaves its name behind in one of those three places; anything absent leaves nothing behind at all.

Present, but inactive until it is asked for

The second box holds everything that exists and does nothing until a request is made. Swap-free status is the clearest case: it is applied to eligible accounts on request rather than by default, so a trader who expects to find it already running reads its absence as a missing feature. Two-step verification behaves the same way — the option is there, the protection is not, until it is turned on.

Items in this box always leave a trace: a request form, a toggle, a line about eligibility. Finding the trace and finding the feature are the same job, which is why this box is worth checking before the search widens.

On another surface, or under another name

The third and fourth boxes waste the most time, because the thing is fully present and fully working. A surface mismatch means looking in the trading window for something the Personal Area owns, or in the Personal Area for something only the chart window reports. A name mismatch means the label on screen and the phrase being typed describe one object in two vocabularies.

Both are cured the same way: stop searching for the word and start describing the job. What has to change — money, a document, a setting, a price, an order? Whichever surface performs that job holds the control, whatever the control happens to be called there.

Sorting a missing item in five questions

1. Does the wording appear anywhere on the account surface? If it appears nowhere at all, treat it as outside the offer and stop.
2. Does it appear as an option, a request form or a note about eligibility? Then it exists and is waiting to be switched on.
3. Does the job concern money, documents or account settings? Those belong to the Personal Area and never to the trading window.
4. Does the job concern quotes, orders or charts? Those belong to the platform, and the Personal Area will not display them.
5. Still nothing? Describe the job instead of the name — the label on screen is often a synonym of the phrase being typed.

The order matters: the first question is the cheapest one and the only one that can end the search.
